About Kono Development Union

The Kono Development Union (KONDU) was formed in Freetown on 1 June 2008 and registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare on 4 June 2008.

Kono people are endowed with mineral resources but ironically live in one of the least developed districts. Alarmed by this fact, we earnestly seek a new frontier for self-determination. The impetus for organizing KONDU lies in the present human condition of the Kono People. In the aftermath of the rebel conflict, they continue to live in abject poverty and subsist under poor standards of education, dismal health conditions, without electricity or water supply and are surrounded by broken road infrastructure. In these baleful circumstances, KONDU was re-born to engage in self-reliance using our collective strengths.

There is yet hope from this penury of the district. Konos occupy high positions in all professional disciplines and hold prestigious positions in Government and the private sector. With this reservoir of talent and abilities, we are imbued with an ardour of renewal for self-determination, and a dedication to excellence in education, public health, agriculture, business ventures and the protection of rights of miners with mining companies.

What is more, Kono People are politically inclined to all political parties and seek partnership for the promotion of their general welfare and equity in national distribution of goods and services. In this respect, KONDU is pleased that one of ours is now Vice President and Konos are eminently placed in Government, Parliament and Local Councils. Conscious of their place in history and the great opportunities they have missed in discord, they are at once determined to develop their homeland in partnership with all their Members of Parliament, the Chiefdom, City and District Councils and especially with their Paramount Chiefs.
